Advice for Changing the Look and Feel of Your Home for the New Year

Advice for Changing the Look and Feel of Your Home for the New Year

Are you looking to make some changes to your home for the New Year, but aren’t sure where to start? The new year is a time when most people make resolutions to change, including making changes to the home. Making changes to your home can give you a peace of mind and serenity; plus, it can enhance your mood and fuel positive energy. Here’s a few inexpensive ways to make changes that will stand out in 2016:

Lower Your Energy Bills

If you’re lucky enough to live in one of the 14 states that are deregulated, you can save big bucks on your energy costs. Not all markets are deregulated for both electricity and gas; most are one or the other. Find out if your state is deregulated by visiting http://www.localelectricitycompanies.com/ because nothing’s going to make you happier at home than increased savings. Put the money you save toward a new renovation or simple DIY project.

A Single Coat of Paint Can Have a Profound Effect

Paint is relatively inexpensive and it’s simple to apply. That being said, it can have a profoundly effective impact on a formally muted room. Try paint colors that are bold and dramatic (a true contrast to what was formally on the walls). For example, if your walls were white, any color will be a dramatic change. If they were dark or dreary, a lighter color is a bold change. The one thing about paint is that if you don’t like it or it becomes outdated, old, and stale, you can just change it on a whim.

Refresh Your Accessories

Purchasing all new furniture is expensive. It may not be an option, especially after holiday shopping. Instead of new furniture, consider swapping out your accessories instead. Adding entirely new accessories and accents can have a huge impact; it can change the entire look of a room.

Some items can be swapped season to season. This can be anything, including pillows, window treatments, lamps, vases, blankets, framed photos, etc. After you do this, rearrange the furniture in the house. You can even swap furniture from one room with another; for example, you can take an ottoman from the office and swap it with an end table in the living room. It will convince old friends that you’ve bought new furniture, even when you haven’t.

Add a new or newly cleaned rug and some candles to finish off the look. When it comes to rugs, the good thing about them is that you can always swap them out with rugs from another room. You may even find that one works better in its new home than it did in the original. Add some candles to various surfaces, as they create a calming atmosphere.

Hang Pictures and Artwork

Have you been looking at the same bare walls for years? Have you had the same picture up for 10 or more years and you don’t want to move it because the wall is discolored? Time to change it up.

There are so many different ideas for DIY projects or suggested wall arrangements that you’re bound to find something that captures your attention. You can even find artwork reasonably priced at your local flea markets and secondhand stores.

You don’t have to spend a fortune just to change things up a bit. The new year is almost here. Think about what you would like to update and get some ideas together. You will be amazed at how different your home can look with even the simplest of changes. Try something you normally wouldn’t and have a Happy New Year!
