Everyone loves animals – adults, children, even other pets. Each and every day, there are hundreds or even thousands of cats, dogs, puppies and kittens who wait in various facilities for a home they can call their own. For each and every person who wishes to own pet, there are several animals awaiting adoption.
Pet adoption makes sense. Many people are leery, for all the right reasons, of purchasing a pet from a breeder, since it is often difficult to know exactly what you are getting. When pets are available for adoption at a store or other facility, they are usually very well taken care of. They get fed and played with daily, are clean, and are usually up-to-date on their vaccinations. Plus, the individual adopting the animal is assured that the animal he or she adopts is, in fact, one with the temperament that will fit in well with the family.
What to Look for in a Facility
Facilities and stores that offer the option to adopt a pet usually provide care to the animal while it is waiting to be adopted. This means the animal is being taken care of properly and has all the necessary shots. Ideally, the store will also perform other services on the animal, and it will be spayed or neutered and even microchipped. These stores also get to know the animal intimately – its demeanour and temperament – in order to match it with the perfect family.
Stores will not allow just anyone to adopt an animal, however. They will interview the prospective family extensively, to make sure that the family is a good fit for the animal being adopted. Paper work will need to be filled out, as well as an in-person interview. Some will even ask questions about the adoptee’s home, to make sure, for instance, that there is a yard for the animal to run around in.
Other Services Provided by the Facility
A store or facility offering pet adoptions, ideally, will also offer other services as well. These services include, but are not limited to, grooming, obedience schools, insurance services and dog or cat boarding. The more services they offer, the more reputable they are and the better they are for the animal staying with them. A reputable facility will also not mind if a customer comes and checks out any of these services, because it has nothing to hide.
One of the nicest things about animal adoption is that many reputable companies will donate, for each adoption they perform, a certain amount of money to a local animal hospital, the RSPCA or some other animal welfare group. It is a great way to make the customer feel like he or she is giving back to the community and to do something to help local animals.
When a family decides to adopt a dog or cat, it can be a fun adventure. When done with the help of a reputable store or another facility, it is even better.
